The partnership focuses on generating carbon offsets from the most at-risk grasslands in North America

Project Type

Carbon Capture and Storage

Alberta, Canada

BMO Radicle Inc. (BMO Radicle) and Ducks Unlimited. (DU) are pleased to announce a new partnership focused on generating voluntary carbon offsets in the US from DU’s Prairie Pothole Avoided Conversion of Grasslands and Shrublands project registered on the American Carbon Registry.

DU’s habitat work with private landowners proactively protects at-risk grasslands and wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region – a landscape that has experienced some of the highest grassland conversion rates on the continent. In addition to providing critical nesting habitat for migratory birds, these grasslands continuously sequester and store carbon and are the foundation of DU’s Carbon Program and carbon trading efforts to date. DU’s Carbon Program furthers its conservation mission by increasing waterfowl habitat in critical nesting areas through voluntary incentives that financially reward landowners for their efforts.

“This is exactly the kind of win-win solution that BMO Radicle helps organizations achieve by balancing profitability and mission-critical sustainability initiatives,” says Rori Cowan, Director of US Business Development for BMO Radicle. “We’re thrilled to partner with the team at Ducks Unlimited to generate grasslands carbon offsets.”

DU and BMO Radicle’s partnership leverages the strengths of DU’s existing conservation initiatives and longstanding innovation, and BMO Radicle’s experience in scaling carbon offset projects and navigating the dynamic marketplace. Together, the two companies are creating a new horizon of opportunity to generate grassland offset credits in key landscapes of North America.

“Our role at DU is to think innovatively on ways in which we can reward landowners for the services they provide to society,” says Billy Gascoigne, DU’s Economist and Carbon Program Lead. “This partnership with BMO Radicle provides a framework for us to be far more efficient in scaling grassland carbon credit development, with the hope that these gains can lead to new opportunities for grassland landowners in high-conversion landscapes.”

DU’s Carbon Program produced the first verified and validated grassland offsets in the U.S., with roughly 80,000 issued to date – the equivalent of 10,000 cars’ emissions.

The two companies have now joined forces to bring an estimated 100,000 credits to the voluntary market by early-2021.
